Scratch test
ALS
ALS is able to provide direct and continuous measurement of mechanical rock properties using the Epslog scratch device, both at the wellsite or in the laboratory. The Wombat measures high-resolution continuous profiles of rock strength (UCS) and ultrasonic P-wave velocity synchronized in depth. A high-resolution picture of the groove is also taken after the tests.
Specifications:

• Profiling the rock mechanical properties (strength and elastic) of whole or slabbed core
• Portable and robust equipment
• Cost effective against conventional methods
• Rapid data acquisition (10m scratched and analysed per day per device)
• A clean fresh surface left by the scratch test may be suitable to conduct other measurements such as probe permeameter prior slabbing.

Applications:

• Evaluation of wellbore stability;
• Sand prediction;
• Upscaling of reservoir properties for robust 1D MEM model leading to hydraulic fracturing design
• Identification of geomechanical facies
• “Scratched” material can be collected along the sample and analysed for mineralogical content (X-Ray Diffraction or FTIR)
• Improved plug selection strategy
