The Mech MACS improves annular velocities and circulation rates without compromising pressures in the well, allowing circulation improvement and boosting wellbore cleaning capabilities.
Wellbore cleanliness is paramount at any stage of the life of a well as build-up of solids compromises access to the well, increasing rig time due to stuck pipe and creates the risk of solids contamination of the reservoir that leads to decreased productivity. However, achieving the correct annular velocities in the wellbore during clean-up can be challenging due to geometry, surface pressure limitations or presence of tools in the string that can limit pumping capacities.
The Mech MACS is a circulation tool that can be used for multiple applications including clean-up or drilling operations to improve circulation and assist with hole cleaning. It is the ideal tool for those wells where geometry creates the risk of solids accumulation that can be detrimental to operations. Once opened, the device allows higher annular velocities to be achieved without compromising pressures, allowing turbulent flow to significantly improve solids removal.
The tool has two primary positions: open and closed. In the open divert mode the collets are pulled into the stroke closed position closing off the lower string preventing the well pressure or under balanced fluid from returning up the work string and allowing circulation through the ports.
In the closed position the collets are pulled into the stroke open position directing the flow from the drill pipe to the annulus via the bit and preventing back pressure. Once the CX-MFFSD has been sheared out, it can be easily opened and closed multiple times by applying weight from the surface to activate the positioning sleeve making it reliable and simple to use.
