Well-Guide RSS™ is a fully closed-loop, automated Rotary Steerable System available in three sizes; 4¾”, 7″ and 10″. Well-Guide RSS™ uses a unique ‘point-the-bit’ steering system to produce a smooth borehole free of tortuosity and to maximize drilling efficiency while providing a fully closed-loop control system.
Well-Guide RSS™ takes a survey every 1.5 minutes, using its own directional sensor package, and automatically calculates the correct toolface to achieve its programmed course. This toolface is achieved by hydraulically deflecting the central rotating shaft relative to the the non-rotating section to point the bit in the direction of the turn. The non-rotating section is prevented from rotating by ARD springs incorporating tungsten carbide inserts.
For reliability and long life the tool is oil filled. Torque and drilling loads are transmitted through the central rotating shaft. The tool is initially programmed with a target course (inclination and azimuth) on surface and can be reprogrammed downhole by using a code of fast or slow drillstring rotations.
Operating Principles
- A rotating shaft is positioned within a non-rotating housing by means of bearings and actuators.
- With information from directional sensors, an on-board computer calculates a toolface and the transmission shaft is automatically deflected in the required direction by means of the system’s actuators.
- The curvature developed by Well-Guide defines the borehole curvature.
- Automatic closed-loop control in both inclination and azimuth provides an accurate borehole profile with minimal surface intervention.
