Cesium formate brine can enable safe, rapid and effective results in a variety of applications without compromising well control.
Stuck pipe pills
Differentially stuck pipe is a common problem for high-density drilling fluids that contain large amounts of weighting material such as traditional water-based muds and oil-based muds (OBMs). The drill string becomes stuck against the wall of the wellbore because of the differential pressure across the thick filtercake.
To resolve the problem the pressure differential needs to be lowered, which is normally done by destroying the filtercake. Testing has shown that concentrated cesium formate brine is extremely effective in destroying OBM filtercake. The performance of the cesium formate stuck pipe pill is not limited to OBMs with barite weighting material. It works just as well with other weighting solids.
Kill pills
High density solids-free kill pills can be formulated up to specific gravity of 2.3. By adding weighting solids, very high-density pills have been formulated at specific gravity up to 3.3.
Gas hydrate dissolution pills
Gas hydrates or clathrate hydrates are ice-like crystalline solids that are formed from mixtures of water and natural gas (usually methane) where pressure, temperature, gas saturation and local chemical conditions combine to make them stable. In oilfield operations, especially in deep water, gas hydrate formation can have serious economic and safety impacts. Low seabed temperatures combined with high fluid pressures promote formation of gas hydrates in both well construction and production.
Cesium formate brine is a very good hydrate inhibitor. Test results provide good indication that cesium formate brine can outperform other well-known hydrate inhibitors. This means that no hydrate inhibiting additives are needed when cesium formate is used for the most demanding well construction applications.
The ability of a cesium formate pill to dissolve hydrate plugs that have formed in other fluids has also been successfully proven in two North Sea field applications.
